food waste > compost re-sauce
I came back home with this in the trunk: 2 tubs of overripe veggies (they're not even scraps, they're just rotting), an entire box of brown bananas and 2 loaves of bread. And that's only because the car and current compost bins can only fit so much; there's A LOT more where that came from.
So here in Australia, the supermarket industry is dominated by two main competitors: Woolworths and Coles. They're huge companies with highly complex processes for running the organisation. Everything seems to operate in a formalised and official way down under, and if not, it only happens at a tiny scale. Not so many dumpster divers, perhaps (especially given the warm weather), but there is an organisation called OzHarvest who goes around and collects and redistributes unsold and unsellable supermarket foods around the city. Then, some of that arrives at a community centre called Belong, where I sourced today's "trash harvest". Here, they run a food co-op for people to buy a bag or two of goods for relatively cheap prices. But even at this level, there is still very significant amounts of food waste! There's still lots of leftovers - the fresh food goes off, maybe not enough people know about it or use it, and so on.
Back at home, I've filled another wheelie bin with scraps for another batch of compost. In the meantime, I'll think about how to connect certain people or certain resources and perhaps initiate some activities to make things work.
