thresh and winnow
The only plant from the mystery flower mix that successfully germinated and grew (this was way back in March, using the damp paper towel method) was amaranth. Of course, I didn't know what the plant was back then. It was only after the bright purple leaves and flowers came out that we could identify it, but by then, the leaves were much too old to harvest for eating. Instead, we let the flowers become heavy with seeds, to save for the next season.
The next season is now. A lot of the seeds have come off the flowers already, but I'll let it dry a bit more before winnowing it properly. Using a sift seems to be the best method, followed by a shake 'n' toss in the wind.
By the way, threshing means hitting the stalks violently with a stick so the flowers and seeds come off.
